The semiprecious stone is named after the area on the Arabian Peninsula where it was first discovered — the Moho province in Yemen. There is also an external similarity of the stone with moss, given by the oxide of manganese and iron. Green moss agate beads is of volcanic origin, born in lava as a result of the fusion of several minerals. Therefore, it has a multi-colored structure. Because of this feature, the pattern on the matte stone is not repeated.
Green moss agate beads are less common than classic striped agates and are considered the most beautiful and expensive in the chalcedony family.
Geological characteristics of the matte stone.
Moss agate mala beads – a kind of quartz, similar in structure to fine-fiber chalcedony. Silica, absorbing impurities, creates a background of white or milky-white color with grayish, brown, cream, and spruce shades. Instances with green patterns create impurities of chlorides. They form “landscapes”, abstract compositions, the interweaving of flowers on a cut stone.
Moss agate mala can be translucent or opaque. In the first version, tree-like inclusions look like 3D objects. When polished, these moss agate mala beads
acquire a glassy sheen.
